He Sold His Livelihood. He Never Sold His Dream: Jhandu Kumar’s Journey to Glory

India’s opening medal at the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026 is much more than a sporting achievement—it is a story of grit, sacrifice and unwavering determination.

Bihar’s Jhandu Kumar etched his name into the history books by winning the bronze medal in the Men’s Heavyweight Para Powerlifting event, becoming India’s first medallist of the Games with a best lift of 190 kg.

But behind the podium finish lies an extraordinary journey that began in the small town of Harnaut in Bihar’s Nalanda district.

Afflicted by polio as a child, Jhandu grew up battling financial hardship. To support his family, he sold vegetables on the roadside before taking up work as an e-rickshaw driver during the COVID-19 pandemic, earning around ₹400 a day. Despite the exhausting routine, he continued training every night, saving whatever little he could for gym fees, nutrition and equipment.

In 2023, with no sponsors or financial backing, Jhandu made the biggest gamble of his life. He sold his only source of livelihood—his e-rickshaw—to fund his participation in the National Para Powerlifting Championship.

His outstanding performance caught the attention of Paralympic champion Rajinder Singh Rahelu, earning him a place at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) training centre in Gandhinagar. There, his raw talent was refined into international excellence.

On 24 July 2026, Jhandu delivered the performance of his life in Glasgow. His successful 190 kg lift secured the bronze medal and India’s first podium finish of the Commonwealth Games.

From selling vegetables to standing on a global podium with the Indian tricolour flying high, Jhandu Kumar’s remarkable journey is a testament to perseverance, courage and the belief that dreams can overcome even the toughest obstacles.

His story is not just about winning a medal—it is about inspiring millions to never give up, no matter how difficult the journey.
