Forever Vozinha. Forever an Inspiration.
Forty-year-old Cape Verde goalkeeper Josimar Dias, better known as Vozinha, delivered one of the most inspiring stories of the FIFA World Cup 2026, proving that determination and resilience can outshine even the biggest names in football.
Raised by his grandparents in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente, Vozinha’s football journey was anything but glamorous.
After years of playing across Angola, Moldova, Cyprus, Slovakia and Portugal’s second division, he arrived at the World Cup as one of the tournament’s oldest and least-publicized players.
Before the tournament, Vozinha revealed that his dream was simple—to face his idol, Lionel Messi, and perhaps exchange shirts after the match. That dream became reality in Cape Verde’s unforgettable knockout clash against defending champions Argentina.
Despite Lionel Messi opening the scoring, Cape Verde fought back to force extra time in a thrilling encounter. Vozinha produced a series of outstanding saves throughout the match, frustrating Argentina’s star-studded attack and keeping his nation within touching distance of a historic upset.
The resistance was finally broken only by a heartbreaking 111th-minute own goal, handing Argentina a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Although Cape Verde’s World Cup journey ended in defeat, Vozinha emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest heroes, finishing with seven saves in the match and 18 across the competition.
The defining moment came after the final whistle when Messi walked over to embrace the veteran goalkeeper before exchanging jerseys—an emotional gesture that symbolized the respect Vozinha had earned from one of football’s greatest players.
While Cape Verde fell short of the next round, Vozinha’s remarkable World Cup story transcended the result.
From the streets of Mindelo to the world’s biggest football stage, his journey became a powerful reminder that perseverance, passion and belief can create unforgettable sporting legacies at any age.
